New code of practice is significant
Dairy UK, the NFU and the NFUS have reached agreement on a voluntary code of best practice on contractual relationships between milk buyers and dairy farmers. Commenting on the landmark agreement Dairy UK Director General Jim Begg said: “I am delighted that Dairy UK, on behalf of its members, has been able to reach agreement with the farming unions on the voluntary code. This important initiative builds upon existing arrangements, which give farmers and processors security in business relationships, whilst adding additional safeguards that will assure farmers that their contracts are not putting them at a disadvantage in the marketplace. |

Comments on Welsh dairy industry
Former Secretary of State for Wales, Lord Morris of Aberavon, has expressed serious concerns for the survival of the UK dairy industry. At the opening the Farmers' Union of Wales's new pavilion at the Royal Welsh Showground, the union's first deputy general secretary and legal adviser, said the dairy industry is 'withering on the vine' because it is operating on an unfair playing field. |

Listed Building Consent could be simplified
The consultation on the simplification of Listed Building Consent (LBC) is an opportunity for those in the sector to press for efficiencies in the process and rules that are fit-for-purpose says Jennifer Hadland of Smiths Gore’s Planning Team, based in the firm’s Darlington office. The consultation, launched last week by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, runs until 23 August. Jennifer Hadland says: While we acknowledge both the importance and the tremendous value of Listed Building Consent in protecting our built heritage, simplification of the rules that govern it will be of great benefit not just to developers but also to the planning authorities themselves.

Countryside businesses are facing a significant drop in confidence and investment, according to the Second Quarter findings of the CLA/Smiths Gore Rural Economy Index (REI). Confidence among the farming sector for the next 12 months has fallen dramatically by 25 percent from a net balance of plus-26 percent to plus-one percent compared with the First Quarter. |

Manorial rights - need to be regsitered by Oct 2013
Manorial rights, derived by virtue of owning the Lordship of a Manor can be hugely varied and may include the rights to shipwrecks; ferries; fairs or markets; sporting and most importantly in terms of potential value, are minerals. The Land Registration Act 2002 states that all manorial rights must be registered by the 13th October 2013.
