Important river restoration at Knepp Castle
Restoring a river system that has been engineered and canalised two hundred years previously is nothing if not ambitious. However, many things undertaken by our predecessors in the name of progress have not unfortunately proven themselves to be sustainable. Early mapping of the upper river Adur on the Knepp Castle Estate in West Sussex established that the river had been straightened in the early nineteenth century. Affordable green homes on the Dormont Estate
Eight new award-winning, energy-saving rural homes for rent were unveiled today at a ceremony on the Dormont Estate near Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire. The houses are built to pioneering ‘Passivhaus’ standards, an industry benchmark of superior quality low energy housing well above current UK requirements, meaning they effectively heat themselves. The homes are the first of their kind to be built on a commercial scale in Scotland as the result of the ‘rural homes for rent’ grant scheme developed by Scottish Land & Estates and piloted by the Scottish Government. |

Scientists are working on six experimental sites in each country – using different native grasses and ‘nuisance’ plants like rushes and bracken to create energy. |
