West Midlands rural regeneration conference

Advantage West Midlands-backed Rural Regeneration Zone (RRZ) Annual Conference will focus on working together to deliver rural regeneration in a new era.  The high profile event, which is being held at Ludlow Racecourse on Friday 2nd July, will provide a unique opportunity to look at ways in which the Zone is helping drive forward the area’s emergence from the downturn and the opportunities/challenges that will no doubt arise from a new political landscape. A new announcement on broadband provision will headline the Conference and there will be a host of keynote speakers on hand to debate present and future issues, including Chairman of Advantage West Midlands Sir Roy McNulty, Jon Dover from Care Farming West Midlands and the possibility of a Minister from the new coalition Government.

Shadow environment secretary Nick Herbert has pledged that, if the Conservatives are elected in to Government, they will require all central government departments to ensure the food they serve meets British standards of production.

Herbert says there is a clear role for the Government to lead by example to boost sustainable food sourcing in the UK.

Every year the public sector spends more than £2bn on food - but not a single rasher of bacon served to our Armed Forces is British and the Treasury buys barely half of its food from Britain.

In future, all Whitehall departments will be required to procure food that meets British standards of production, as indicated by the official ‘Red Tractor’ scheme, wherever this can be achieved without increasing overall costs.Nick said that Labour's failure to back local produce is "shameful", and added: "We’re taking this action because we care about local food and we care about the countryside."
