The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has welcomed a pilot badger cull in Wales .
The Welsh Assembly Government agreed to the culls - which will take place mainly in the north of Pembrokeshire - on Wednesday, 13 January 2010. The cull will also take place in small areas of Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire, where 42 per cent of cattle owners have had at least one case of TB in their herd since 2003. Badgers are believed to be responsible for spreading the disease amongst cattle. Nicky Paull, former president of the BVA, said the move demonstrated a commitment by the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) to tackle the disease. The assembly also passed stricter measures on keeping cattle.
@We are pleased that the WAG recognises that the targeted cull must take place alongside stricter cattle measures as there is no single solution to tackling this devastating disease,” he says. “Farmers will also have to understand the huge importance of implementing the stricter cattle measures. The rest of the UK will be watching the pilot cull with interest and we applaud the Welsh Assembly Government and Chief Veterinary Officer for Wales for taking such a bold step.” |
